Description

Under direct supervision for Ultrasound Technologist I and general supervision for Ultrasound Technologist II, the ultrasound t echnolog ist is responsible for preparing and positioning patients for various medical imaging procedures, such as, routine ultrasounds to produce high-quality diagnostic images that can be interpreted by a Radiologist.

PAYROLL TITLES AND APPROXIMATE SALARIES:

Radiologic Specialist I : $41.35 - $54.23 hourly

Radiologic Specialist II : $45.62 - $55.45 hourly

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:

Radiologic Specialist I - is the entry, training level of the Radiologic Specialist series.

Radiologic Specialist II - is the journey level of the Radiologic Specialist series. Incumbents have a minimum of two (2) years’ experience and perform their duties more independently in their respective specialty areas. Radiologic Specialist II will also assist in the training of student technologists and other imaging staff members as needed.

Radiologic Specialist I and II are represented by the Service Employees' International Union (SEIU) and are eligible for overtime compensation.

The eligible list established from this recruitment may be used to fill current and future Regular (including Temporary and Fixed-term), Intermittent, Per Diem Pool, and Extra Help vacancies. There are currently two (2) intermittent vacancies at Ventura County Medical Center and Santa Paula Hospital .

NOTE: An Intermittent Employee is a person employed for intermittent/temporary work on a day-to-day basis. Intermittent employees are not regular County employees and are not eligible for County benefits. Additionally, Intermittent employees are limited to working a maximum of 1,664 hours per fiscal year (July 1 – June 30).

Examples Of Duties

Duties may include but are not limited to the following:

  • Prepares and positions patients for examination according to approved ultrasound protocols;

  • Operates various portable and stationary imaging equipment throughout the hospital to obtain images for diagnostic interpretation by Radiologists;

  • Completes the billing process for each patient encounter utilizing all Radiology department electronic systems and the hospital electronic medical record system;

  • Transports patients to and from the imaging departments when necessary;

  • Assists in the training of student technologists and other imaging staff members ; and

  • Performs other related duties as required.

These are entrance requirements to the examination process and assure neither continuance in the process nor placement on an eligible list.

EDUCATION, TRAINING, and EXPERIENCE:

Radiologic Specialist I

  • Graduation from a single two-year allied health education program that is patient-care related; OR

  • Graduation from a program accredited by The Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Professionals (CAAHEP) that specifically conducts programmatic accreditation for diagnostic medical sonography/diagnostic cardiac sonography/vascular technology; OR

  • Bachelor’s degree in sonography or vascular technology; OR

  • Bachelor’s degree in any major and the equivalent of one (1) year of full-time clinical ultrasound/vascular experience. (NOTE: this experience cannot be used to satisfy the experience required below for Radiologic Specialist II)

Radiologic Specialist II

In addition to the requirements above for the Radiologic Specialist I, the Radiologic Specialist II also requires:

  • A minimum of two (2) years of Ultrasound experience

    NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:

  • Must be willing to accept Intermittent work.

  • Must possess and maintain a valid CPR certificate.

  • Must be willing to work various shifts at Ventura County Medical Center and Santa Paula Hospital .

    DESIRED

  • Registration by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS).

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES:

Comprehensive knowledge of: anatomy, physiology, physics and medical terminology as it relates to each imaging modality; exam specific requirements when imaging neonates, pediatric and adult patients; adherence to HIPAA regulations; documentation required for exam billing processes; general imaging patient care practices/operations utilized in a hospital setting; and ultrasound.

Skill in: positioning patients for image acquisition; shielding patients per ALARA; and recognizing and evaluating projected images for clarity, content and scope of examination.

Demonstrated ability to: perform routine and complex and/or specialty imaging services studies to include measurements of normal and abnormal pathology and detailed anatomical statistics; proficiently perform exams requiring sterile field set-up and maintenance; exercise a high degree of tact, courtesy, poise, sensitivity and respect when explaining procedures to patients; provide clear and concise explanations to patients to reduce anxieties and obtain cooperation; establish effective working relationships with patients, physicians, and staff; and communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

Supplemental Information:

Duties may be performed in an acute care setting and include frequent lifting of and/or transportation of patients by wheelchair or gurney/stretcher, may require moving imaging equipment to patient's bedside for portable studies and standing for extended periods of time, may include possible continued exposure to x-radiation scatter, and include possible exposure to various types of infectious diseases, blood, body tissues or excretions.

Shift assignments may include VCMC and/or Santa Paula Hospital and day, evening, night, weekend, and holiday hours.

WRITTEN EXAMINATION - 100% : A job-related written examination will be administered to test candidates' knowledge of ultrasound, data review, and interpersonal relationships. Candidates must earn a score of seventy percent (70%) or higher to qualify for placement on the eligible list.

Applicants successfully completing the examination process may be placed on an eligible list for a period of one (1) year.
