Universal Engineering Sciences (UES) has an opening in our Environmental Department. UES is a nationwide leader in Geotechnical Engineering, Construction Materials Testing and Inspection, Building Code Compliance, Environmental, Occupational Health & Safety, and Building Envelope.

Summary

The Ecological Consultant role is responsible for assessing, mitigating, and providing recommendations regarding the environmental impacts of engineering projects. The ideal candidate is a reliable, trustworthy individual who thrives in a fast-paced environment where collaboration and autonomy are valued.

Qualifications

The Ecological Consultant role is responsible for evaluating the environmental impact of various projects and providing recommendations for sustainable practices. This role involves conducting field surveys, analyzing data, and preparing reports to support environmental compliance and conservation efforts.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

  • Lifting and/or occasionally moving up to 35 lbs. can be expected, with or without reasonable accommodation.

  • Required to drive, stand, walk, use hands to type, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; talk and hear. Body motions and movements include bending, twisting, reaching, stooping, pulling, kneeling, lifting, carrying, and pushing, with or without reasonable accommodation.

  • Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment and in the field.

  • Fieldwork may involve exposure to various environmental conditions, including outdoor work in different weather conditions and potentially remote or challenging locations

  • This is not a remote position. This role will be based on the selected job posting location.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Conducting Phase 1 ESA in accordance with ASTM standards and regulatory requirements

  • Reviewing historical records, site plans, and environmental databases to identify potential environmental concerns

  • Performing site inspections to assess current environmental conditions and identify any visible signs of contamination or environmental hazards

  • Meeting key personnel and stakeholders to gather information about past site uses and potential sources of contamination

  • Preparing comprehensive Phase 1 ESA reports outlining findings, conclusions, and recommendations for further action or investigation

  • Conducting EIA;s to evaluate the potential environmental consequences of proposed projects

  • Assessing the impact on soil, water, air quality, biodiversity, and ecosystems

  • Developing mitigation measures and environmental management plans to minimize adverse effects and promote sustainability

  • Conducting habitat assessments to evaluate the ecological value of natural areas

  • Designing and implementing habitat restoration projects to enhance biodiversity and ecosystem services

  • Monitoring restoration efforts and assess their effectiveness over time

  • Staying informed about environmental regulations, permits and compliance requirements

  • Assisting clients in obtaining necessary permits and approvals for their projects

  • Providing guidance on best practices for environmental stewardship and sustainable development

  • Communicating findings and recommendations to clients, regulatory agencies, and stakeholders

  • Collaborating with multidisciplinary teams, including engineers, planners and regulatory experts, to achieve project goals while minimizing environmental impact

  • Participating in public consultations and outreach activities to engage with local communicates and address environmental concerns

  • Other duties may be assigned

Required Qualifications:

  • Valid Florida Driver’s License with an acceptable driving record (in accordance with our Driver’s License and Motor Vehicle Record Check Criteria), may or may not be required to perform the duties and responsibilities of the role

  • Ability to pass a background check screening in accordance with Florida’s Jessica Lunsford Act (or equivalent state classification)

  • Proficiency in wetland delineation with demonstrable experience

  • Demonstrate a strong understanding of sediment biogeochemistry and wetland hydrology

  • Bachelor's degree or masteral’s degree in environmental science, ecology, biology, or related field

  • Proficiency with ArcMap, Tremble GPS

  • Ability to read and write, including interpreting documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals, as well as writing routine reports and correspondence and speaking effectively with colleagues, supervisors, and customers/clients

  • Computer skills sufficient to operate a laptop, including sending and receiving emails

  • Mathematical skills sufficient to add, subtract, multiply, and divide into all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals

  • Reasoning ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, and diagram form

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 3-5 years of experience in the same or related field

  • Experience in conducting Phase 1 ESA and other environmental assessments

  • Knowledge of environmental regulations

  • Strong analytical, communication and project management skills

  • Certification or licensure (e.g. Professional Geologist, Environmental Consultant)

  • Previous experience in an A/E/C firm
