The Role

Cypress Creek Renewables is seeking a highly motivated SCADA Engineer with a proven track record of experience in utility-scale solar. The SCADA Engineer will play a pivotal role in optimizing our controls and communication systems for a growing distribution and transmission portfolio of Solar and Storage assets. This engineer will additionally be critical in our I&C and Control Center group ensuring that the systems and tools available to the organization are effective in creating a safe, cohesive, and scalable control solution.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Technically lead the I&C organization’s SCADA team on multiple projects with a diverse set of technologies, designs, and OEM’s

  • Maintain existing controls and communications systems, lead remediation of systems that fail, and assist in development/implementation of controls for new systems and upgrades to existing systems.

  • Serve as technical lead for SCADA providers/vendors during implementation and ongoing support services.

  • Design and help implement next generation control systems for an existing fleet of >4 GW of utility scale Solar and Storage

  • Develop recommended schedules for routine maintenance, service, troubleshooting and repair of SCADA and I&C equipment at facilities.

  • Manage complex tasks and projects as required for the Operations & Maintenance team.

  • Aid field technicians and control room operators with complex system troubleshooting.

  • Perform root cause analysis for major system faults.

  • Serve as main point of interface/SME for all technical questions regarding facility control

  • Closely coordinate with NERC compliance team to maintain all requirements for NERC CIP

  • Review design elements related to SCADA and controls prior to beginning services in order to ensure effective turnover to the O&M organization.

Desired Education and/or Work Experience

  • Strong knowledge of automation protocols including but not limited to: OPC UA, Modbus, RTU/TCP, DNP3.

  • In Depth understanding of power plant operating procedures especially as it relates to governing bodies such as compliance entities, Transmission operators and generators

  • Familiarity with at least one SCADA platform within renewables (preferably GE Cimplicity, Ignition, neuron)

  • B.S. and/or Masters in Engineering, preferably Electrical Engineering.

  • Professional Engineering (PE) license, or Engineer in Training (EIT), or desire to obtain one

  • 4+ years of experience in the operation and troubleshooting of electrical equipment.

  • Experience or education in data analytics: using programming (Python, R, VBA, etc) to manipulate, analyze, and automate tasks with large data sets; preferably in the solar industry

  • Established record of experience in all aspects of electrical maintenance, including DC systems, AC medium voltage systems, and network communications and monitoring.

  • Established record of experience or knowledge of electrical power systems, protection coordination, and modifying relay settings.

  • Established record in relay operation, settings, and event analysis.

  • Proficiency with MS Office Suite, with a deeper focus on Excel.

  • Ability to take direction and complete tasks with minimal oversight.

Requirements/Work Environment:

  • Work is to be performed primarily in an office environment with occasional field visits.

  • Ability to obtain unescorted access for NERC/CIP facilities.

  • Valid Driver’s License.

  • Must have the ability to travel, work on-call during off-shift hours and weekends.

Location: Ideally, we would like our SCADA Engineer to be based in our Durham, NC office to best serve the control center. This position will be expected to visit sites on occasion.
