New York Botanical Garden REU Plant Science Intern in Bronx, New York

Position Summary:

This REU, Research Experience for Undergraduates, will work in tandem with NYBG’s NSF project, “OPUS: A Career in Cycad Biology: An e-monograph” (NSF: DEB-2140319), to enhance knowledge on cycads, complete ongoing investigations, and scoring characters for living and existing taxa. The student will work with the laboratory technician and work under Dr. Dennis Stevenson.

Additionally, this position supports, through actions and conduct, NYBG’s Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Accessibility initiatives and helps to build and maintain an inclusive organization culture throughout the institution.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Formulate hypotheses regarding cycads and guided in their research by an experienced PI and technician

  • Draft and finalize webpages for the World List of Cycads (WLoC) to help serve as a comprehensive resource for the public and cycadologists.

  • Develop science laboratory usage skills.

  • With guidance from their advisor, draft and present research findings

    Qualifications:

  • Applicants must be currently enrolled in an accredited degree-granting, undergraduate institution. Graduate students are not permissible for this role.

  • Applicant must be willing to work in a laboratory setting and abide by Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) standards.

  • Excellent communication and writing skills

    Physical Demands & Work Environment:

  • Work in a laboratory setting, working with potentially harmful chemicals and abiding by PPE safety practices

  • Move/Lift up to 25 lbs of equipment

    Baseline Work Schedule:

    Monday – Friday, 9am-5pm.

    This internship will run for eight consecutive weeks before ending.

    Pay Rate: $20/hr pay

    In addition, the following costs associated with the internship will be covered up to the amounts listed below:

  • Housing/accommodation expenses up to $3,450.

  • Unlimited monthly MetroCard, covered for two months

  • Food expenses up to $2,240.

  • Relocation travels up to $500.

  • Materials and supplies up to $1,000.
