WSP USA Senior Toxicologist in Boise, Idaho

This Opportunity

WSP is currently initiating a search for a Senior Toxicologist for our Boise, ID office. The following locations will also be considered: Portland, OR. Be involved in projects within Mine Environment, a division of WSP’s Earth & Environment Team, and be a part of an organization that meets our client’s objectives and solves their challenges.

Responsibilities of the role will include:

  • Designing and/or overseeing field programs to support baseline ecological characterization and/or environmental monitoring programs (time in the field is expected to be minimal for this mid-level position)

  • Developing toxicological effect assessments

  • Recommend corrective or mitigative strategies

  • Preparing reports, presentations, and proposals and participating in client meetings

  • Implementing quality assurance/quality control measures applicable to the task

  • Developing your technical skills and sharing these skills with other members of your team and your technical discipline

  • Overseeing junior staff in the above activities

  • Managing projects according to client-approved scopes of work, and delivering high-quality deliverables on time and within budget

  • Contributing to the business and technical mission of a multi-disciplinary team environment within Mine Environment and related technical discipline groups

Your Impact

  • Perform professional toxicologist work and conduct investigations, inspections, studies, and forecasts pertaining to existing and modelled surface water resources to determine ecotoxicological health impact.

  • Participate in toxicological and environmental risk identification and assessment, offering input on action plans to mitigate exposure to toxins and toxicants and/or potential adverse effects of chemical substances on living organisms.

  • Develop operating strategies to reduce the quantity and toxicity of pollutants.

  • Work as part of a cross-functional team to execute and/or oversee project work, permit applications, compliance documentation, and technical assessment memoranda.

  • Assist with development and scoping of projects.

  • Maintain quality control standards and procedures for accurate and precise measurements, statistical analysis, and reporting.

  • Prepare data and visualizations such as tables, charts, accurate reports, and illustrations for the interpretation or presentation of data, findings, or analyses.

  • Generate complete, accurate, and concise documentation using electronic systems, computer modeling, and/or laboratory analysis.

  • Interact with existing and potential clients in a confident and professional manner.

  • Assist with preparing and implementing site Health and Safety Plans (HASPs).

  • Comply with regulatory requirements pertaining to the data integrity, documentation, procedures, training, monitoring systems, and record compliance and retention.

  • Remain current in latest toxicology techniques and practices.

  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.

  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.

Who You Are

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Toxicology, Environmental Science, or closely related discipline

  • 5 or more years of relevant post-education experience working in toxicology and risk assessment

  • Proficient knowledge of toxicology principles, practices, and processes

  • Working knowledge of the techniques used in identifying, measuring, sampling, and analyzing environmental data

  • Strong ability to make technical computations and calculations involving the application of toxicology principles, understanding plans and specifications and making factual comparisons to the appropriate regulations or toxicological criteria, guidelines, benchmarks, etc.

  • Project management experience with small to mid-level projects including tracking hours and expenses for project work

  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to a scientific and non-scientific audience

  • Highly capable self-leadership with attention to detail, multi-tasking, and prioritization of responsibilities in a dynamic work environment

  • Ability to work independently and provide guidance and leadership to junior team or project members, with strict adherence to QA/QC

  • Proficiency with technical writing, office automation, software, technology, math principles, predictive models, spreadsheets, and tools

  • Developed critical thinking, problem-solving, and analytical skills required to apply technical knowledge to reach conclusions from testing results, data collation, and/or statistical analysis

  • Ability to assertively direct junior staff, field staff, or subcontractors to consistently complete tasks safely and efficiently

  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies

  • Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Toxicology

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and R

  • Background in aquatic toxicology and ecological risk assessment

  • A member of and/or actively participate in related professional practice organization(s)

  • Working knowledge of relevant environmental laws, regulations, compliance practices, and record-keeping requirements
