CITY OF BILLINGS FIREFIGHTER in BILLINGS, Montana
The City of Billings is seeking a Firefighter to respond to alarm and other emergency calls to protect life and property; depending on the nature of the emergency, provide basic life support, perform extraction and rescue, perform fire suppression and prevention activities. To participate in fire prevention programs and inspections, station and apparatus maintenance, and training activities. Note: Candidate Physical Agility Test (CPAT) results must be attached to your application and must be dated within one year of the date of your City of Billings job application. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: -Respond to alarms and assist in the suppression of fires. - Operate all types of portable fire extinguishers, pike poles, hand lines, smoke ejectors, salvage covers, forcible entry tools, emergency medical equipment and other rescue equipment. - Respond to emergency medical incidents. - Perform cleaning, salvage, and overhaul work following fire. - Respond to hazardous material incidents. - Participate in the performance of investigations. - Drive and operate equipment under limited conditions. - Participate in periodic testing of pumps, ladders, and other apparatus and equipment. - Performs equipment checks prior to emergencies. - Participate in fire drills. - Perform home and commercial inspections for fire prevention and pre-fire planning. - Check occupancy loads and fire lane violations. - Assist in training new employees. - Conduct station tours. - Maintain a variety of records. - Assist in maintaining fire equipment, station, and grounds. - Operate radio equipment. Required Qualifications and Skills for Probationary Fire Fighter: - High school diploma. - Up to one (1) year of combined education and experience in the areas of fire suppression and prevention. - Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug and nicotine test, psychological examination, physical examination, and a Federal and State finger-print criminal background check. - Must possess State of Montana EMT Basic certification or must be obtained within six (6) months of employment. - National Registry EMT Basic certification. - Must maintain the minimum Montana and National Register EMT Basic level certification throughout Billing Fire Department career. - Must have good interpersonal skills. Preferred Qualifications and Skills for Probationary Fire Fighter: -Associate's degree in Fire Science or equivalent. Required Qualifications and Skills for Fire Fighter: -Qualifications include successful completion of probationary period. Required Qualifications and Skills for Fire Fighter I: -Qualifications include 18 months of satisfactory service as a Fire Fighter. - Completion of NFPA standards for a Fire Fighter I. Required Qualifications and Skills for Fire Fighter II: - Qualifications include 30 months of satisfactory service as a Fire Fighter I. - Completion of NFPA standards for a Fire Fighter II. Additional Qualifications and Skills for Fire Fighter through Fire Fighter II: - Must maintain the minimum Montana and National Register EMT Basic level certification throughout Billing Fire Department career Salary Range: $23.4490 - $32.5752. Salary at hiring will be $23.4490 and tops out at $32.5752 as a firefighter. Salary increases with promotions to Engineer and Captain. A COLA raise will be added to the salary on July 1, 2024. Work Schedule: During probationary period: Four (4) 10-hour days. Days off to be determined. After probationary period: 27-day total work cycle consisting of 7 consecutive work shifts of 24-hours on duty and 48-hours off duty, immediately followed by 6 consecutive days off.
